Knitting Exercises

Published by flemisa at 8:56 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

The very action of knitting, no matter what style of knitter your are, promotes movement of fingers and your wrists.  There are also actions that I have found to be a help.

When in a warm weather exercise class, we would start with the larger motions of circle drawing with the full arm, smaller motions of drawing circles with the wrist, and then finger movements.  Pretend you are playing the piano with exaggerated movements of the fingers also helps.  Matching your fingers to your thumb and pairing up your fingers also limbers your fingers.  Rolling something back and forth just using your wrist also gives your wrists a good workout.  All these can be done anywhere.

It is the warmth that can make any exercise easier.  This warmth  can be from warm water in the pool, the bath or a bowl.  It can be from wrist warmers worn in a chilly environment.  (These also make good small, take along knitting projects.)

This week I bought myself a pair of Handeze Gloves that are made of nylon and Spandex.  The idea is that they will provide warmth and support that help with typing, knitting and such.  Finding that I enjoy the support but haven’t knit enough with them to decide how much of a help they will be.

One thing I’ll also mention is having a cream that helps to ease any pain, make the hands feel smooth and, because it is massaged on, increases blood circulation while warming.  I use Topricin which a knitting workshop teacher recommended.  Available in the States and by mail order, it has no smell, is all natural ingredients and feels good.

What have you found to help the hands.
